Okay, question for you: How much riding experience do you have??? If you were considering a Katana, I'll take it that you have relatively little. Under this assumption, I'm going to VERY STRONGLY persuade you to get a 500 or less cc bike. Your flesh, head, and other 2000 body parts will thank you.

Otherwise, the VFRs are great bikes. More on the heavy side b/c they are technically sport touring bikes, and thus have the size and weight for extended time on the interstate.

True I don't have much riding experience. The only reason I wanted the Katana was cause it was cheap. I was pretty stuck on getting a 600 too but I might be able to get this VFR 750 for a very very good deal. I've ridden a few of them like CBR's and Ninjas and it wasn't a problem so I'm not too worried.

At least you've ridden some things before. The Katana would still be my recommendation, but if you get the "viffer" (as I call mine) for a good price just keep your head on your shoulders and I'm sure you'll be fine. I almost let the viffer get away from me a few days ago b/c I was pushing myself too hard... Once I started to use my brain again all was good.

I'd say forget about anything smaller than a 600. I learned on my old school 93 Yamaha FZR 600. Not too much power but enough to the point where I wasn't too embarassed to ride it when I got good. If I could do it all over again I would have gotten a GSX-R 750.

Ah, but my dear friend, that was before most 600s were true supersports. Early 90's sport 600s are MUCH lighter tuned than today's 600: The new CBR RR as a prime example. My "first" bike was a GS500, but I also had previous riding experience and outgrew it. My target size for my next bike is a newish 600 because of tuning and *anticipated* abilities.

I understand completely but I've always been in love with the GSX-R. I've ridden R6's and old school mid 90's 900RR's and I find that the 750 is exactly where I like it. It's all in prefference and rider. I've ridden with some pro/shop owners and I've seen a 250-300lb guy blow by R1's and 900's on a shitty little 95 CBR 600 F3 in turns.

If you were to buy a Katana you would be laughed at by the motorcycling community, no joke. Its the 'jellybean' young punk ride of choice. I ride a 98 VFR and I love it, its a true cyclist bike though I need more hp(I'm looking at the new ZZR). I would say the 97 750VFR is a fine bike and I think the Yamaha yzf600r is a great all around bike. If you can get your hands on an 98+ VFR then I think that is the best way to go, they don't depreciate like the other bikes I've seen.. a friend of mind has a 2000 ZX9, chromed frame and rims to boot, and my bike is worth more than his.

i got a 95 katana 600 and if put a few hundred dollars into it, Itll be able to keep up with a honda vtr1000 on the 1/8 and 1/4 mile. i love my kat, but i want a bit more power off the line. i got my carbs jetted, yoshi pipe, changed sprockets. just changing out your sprockets will make it be able to beat a hyabusa in the 1/4 mile running around a 10.23. A full sprocket change and chain will run about 500 dollars, but its worth it!!!! Its nothing better than to pull up next to a honda 900rr and be able to blow it away!!!

Re: Re: need info on 94 suzuki katana 600

The Katana fills its role in the motorcycling community. It's gotten a bad rep just because it's not the "high performance machine" that most people want. It's a good 600 for people to start on. It's very forgiving but it is still a 600 with an inline 4. Basically, people think that the Kat is a bad bike because it's not the biggest or baddest bike around.

Remember, it's not the bike that matters, it's the rider. Become a skillful and smart rider, and you have the potential to beat dang near anyone out there.

Katanas are freakin great! They can be found cheap as hell they look sweet are freakin bullit proof and btw they even can go fast. Here's what I've been through so far: 1st bike 500cc 88 honda interceptor.. learned on it had fun and hell it was a sweet bike.. 2nd 1990 750 katana all tricked out sprockets jetted yoshi pipe advanced ignition.. the thing flew! now i've tamed it down a little and have a 93 600 katana because hey they are fun, handel well and shit the 750 always felt way the hell too heavy I should have just bought a lower seat!
Kats also freaking look awsome as a street fighter or "naked bike" but personally I love the jellybean shape more plastic to paint and look sweet.. And with the kat its not too bad long distances and if you get better tires and just jetted it'll handle great.

Just get a bike, learn to ride, and keep it wheels down.
