right side axel shaft bushing (info)

Any info would be helpful,
1998 ram 1500 dana 44 (?) I was helping a friend replace the front axel u joints after we pulled the right side axel it slipped from his hand a mushed the bushing in the inner end of the shaft that I believe keeps the shaft from clunking around. Is this part avalible? Has anyone ever changed just the bushing before. Or will he have to buy a whole inner shaft?

I'm not exactly sure which part you are talking about?
are you talking about the little "nipple" thing on the end of the outer half of the passanger side shaft, the part that sits inside the inner shaft at the CAD?

Re: right side axel shaft bushing (info)

If you were to pull the axel shaft out of the passengers side there is what looks to be a graphite bushing that at first looks like part of the steel axle. once you clear the gear oil off it( or drop it on the floor and break it) you can see its a separate piece. I talked with the local dodge guy and he says You have to buy the whole shaft. But He didn't sound to confident so I hope you guys can help.

well, sience it's a 98, it's got a CAD, which means that the axle shaft on the passanger side it two pieces. you should only have to replace the one dammaged piece of the shaft.

ok, this link has a picture of a jeep D30 passanger sie axle shaft assembly, but it's basically the same as the D44 in the dodges, just smaller.

the part of the shaft that goes into the dif should be fine, as it's not required to be out to change U-joints. you can most likely just get a replacement for the one piece of the shaft that was dropped, and reuse the existing stub shaft, and intermediate shaft.

Re: right side axel shaft bushing (info)

ok, I found some pictures of D44 shafts,
just to make sure we're talking about the same thing, it's the little ring looking thing on the end of the shaft on the left side in this pic?
http://dodgeram.org/tech/repair/4X4/axle_shafts.jpg

according to this site,http://dodgeram.org/tech/repair/4X4/4x4_engagment.htm that is part of the needle bearing that is in the end of the shaft. I could be wrong, but I would think that you should be able to just get a new bearing, and reuse the old shaft.

Re: right side axel shaft bushing (info)

Thanks Keith I have been looking all over the place for a picture. That part on the end of the shaft on the left of the picture is what I need. When it came apart I didnt see any rollers from the bearing.(?) I will have to make the run to a dodge dealer smoewhere that may have a better parts guy.
Once again thanks for the info.
