Window won't go down/won't go up
'96 Town Car, Signature Series.
I took the door panel off and can seen that the cable is frayed. Seems obvious that it's getting stuck in the track or a pulley or something. It WILL go up and down about 4-5 inches in either direction, so I'm pretty sure the motor is still fine(?) So, replacing the cable seems to be the obvious answer but, there's no freakin' room to work inside the door! How is one supposed to replace said cable? I can't even get my hand in there well enough to feel either end of the cable, and I have pretty skinny hands-- let alone being able to even see what's going on in there! ________ Synthetic weed Last edited by LieutenantCracker; 04-21-2011 at 06:21 AM. |

Re: Window won't go down/won't go up
It is common for the cable to wear out with age. You should replace the whole window regulator assembly, AFAIK there is no official replacement for the cable, my brother tried to replace it and he ended up replacing the whole regulator because the cable kept braking at the ends of it.
To remove it you have to drill out the 3 1/4" rivets holding it to the door. Since you'll be removing the regulator and the motor, it would be a good idea to replace the motor nylon bushings too, these can be bought at any autoparts store like autozone, advance auto, etc. Look for a red blister and HELP! brand. Best regards, Oscar.

Re: Window won't go down/won't go up
I just replace all four on my 96 TC. got them on line about $20-25 each. I only needed two of them but replaced them all anyway. Also replaced the gears in the motors while you have them apart. Autozone $20 each. They should last for years without any more trouble.

I buy mine on Ebay!
Caution - Always make sure your window is all the way up, or down when shutting the door. The cable will bounce around and bind up the window regulator. The next time you use the electric window, it will break. |
