IF the battery cables or hot...

does this mean your starter crapped out or is GOING to crap out? heard this on the web somewhere. Thanks.

How hot are they getting? I would doubt it was the starter, unless it gets hot and smokes when you try to start it. Check all your battery connections, also the grounds (braided wire) at the firewall and radiator support wall.

actually might just be the ambient temperature throughout the compartment. (DUH!) thanks though

Glad yours aren't on the verge of meltdown. When there is a problem that makes them too hot due to a short or other problem, even excessive attempts to start an engine, you won't be able to hold your hand on them. If the positive and negative are both the about same temperature, you should be ok.
