Rim Damage - How much is too much?
Hi everyone. I had some new tires installed today, and after getting home and inspecting further I found damage on one of the rims. I’m somewhat unsure if it was damaged during install or if it existed before and I never noticed it. I probably should mention that I had larger (wider) tires installed - factory were 235/65R18 and I had 265/60R18 tires installed. Not sure if that makes any difference.
Im wondering - does the damage appear minor to you guys? Would you be concerned and remedy it, or should I not worry? Thanks for the help! |

Check for leaks at the damaged area using soap and water. It looks like the damaged "rim" is just a wheel cover.

First, that is not install damage - that's damage by hitting an object in the road. Installers don't generate enough force to bend the metal like that. But they can scrape and gouge!!
That damage isn't too bad. Keep an eye on it. I would expect that metal edge to break off at some point in time - and that should trigger replacing the wheel. |

Too bad we don't have a full picture..I have to agree with JeffMorris. Looks like a wheel cover.

Interesting. I think it's pretty clearly the lip of an alloy wheel. I think what might be throwing folks off is the grayish-white color on the tire bead. I'm not sure what that is, but the wheel and the damage looks to me to be unquestioningly an allow wheel.
