Exclamation Recall 1997-2003 Pontiac Grand Prix

This was in our local paper today. A recall on the Pontiac Grand Prix GDP Models with a 3.8 liter supercharged v-6 engine. Could catch fire. They are warning people not to park it in the garage or carport until the problem can be fixed. Here is a link to the article.

Just thought I should pass the word on....

Thanks for the notice.

These two posts from different members on the same issue have been combined since they are the same topic.

GTP recall

Does anybody know what parts the dealer is going to fix under this new recall that I heard about yesterday? This recall is to address the problem of an engine fire due to an oil leak.

What do you think?

Re: GTP recall

there is already a thread on this topic

as for what will be replaced, they will be replacing the front...and only the front valve cover gasket. not real sure why...kinda half a$$ in my book.

they will also be removing the plastic peice that you see connected to your front valve cover gasket that holds the plug wires in place, and will be replacing it w/ individual plug wire holder "thingy's"

Yeah everybody is talking about the recall but nobody has said what parts were being replaced. Wow, 1 whole valve cover gasket, not to mention the easiest one to do. I think they should recall the rear main leak issue. About 12,000 miles ago I had my rear main seal replaced and it is leaking again already. What a joke.

Thanks for the info.

Yeah, mines leaking either out of the oil pan gasket or the rear main seal. Cant tell really which one. How much was it to have a rear main seal replaced? might just hold off on mine, its only down about a half quart between oil changes,

And What the Heck is that?!?!? Just one valve cover gasket? Jees, how stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: GTP recall

Here is my two cents worth. It is a worthless recall and I am disregarding it. I don't know of any L67 SII 3800 owner regardless of GM make that has the original valve cover gaskets. I replaced mine back at around 70K miles. Old history with leaks and possible fire as a result of burning oil on the exhaust manifold or headers, if installed.

Re: Recall 1997-2003 Pontiac Grand Prix

We just got our notice from GM in the mail today.
I just now at 78,000 miles have a gasket leaking, very small, but nonetheless I'll let them deal with it.

Kind of shocked to see this, but at least they are going to do "something" regardless how minute it may be.

I've already replaced both CV's, how about they do something with the rack issues? I have to replace my high pressure hose and eventually the rack.

An issue I brought up to my dealer and I quote, "That's normal, we're not going to fix it." What?
Needless to say no more work was brought to them, and that is not normal.

Anyway, I'm curious as to how long this is going to take them.

wow that is crazy but i think if a GTP could catch fire while not runnig then there is no reason why any other car could catch fire too right lol

Recall?

Did anyone get a safety recall notice in the mail from GM about the 3800 supercharged engines causing a fire due to oil dripping onto the exhaust manifold and spark plug wires?

Your post has been merged with the one (actually many) posted earlier on the recall.

Re: Recall 1997-2003 Pontiac Grand Prix

I got the letter from GM too. I will disregard it like BNaylor due to the fact that I have already replaced the valve cover gaskets and don't have any leaks at the present time. I also don't use the plastic wire cover either due to having TOG headers.
