1984 318i no spark after long storage

Spouse's 318i manual trani has been sitting for about 8 yrs, is turning over no problem but not getting spark. Cleaned contacts, but has been so long since it's been used have lost track of quirks. Sometimes would die while driving, had to rap on some relay to get it going again (I just hit any little box under hood could find and then never drove it again). But could use some recommendations as to likely suspects for next steps of investigating. Maybe a list in order of probability for this model?
Actually in not bad condition all things considered, and was fun to drive with good mpg when it was behaving itself.
Thanks, Linda in NW WA where dampness may have had something to do with it.

Ooops, just found title, and car is a 1985 NOT 1984 model with the newer body style and unknown other differences.
Still hoping for some guidance for where to go next on diagnosing electrical concerns.
Thank, Linda
