Re: 96 geo metro crankshaft pulley bolt keeps snapping

Did you replace it with a new one or a used one. How tight are you putting it back on? I know it needs to be tight but no TOO tight! I used to have a bad habit of tightening bolts as tight as I could get them. The only good thing I got from that habit is now I am Jedi Master of removing broken bolts an re-threads...

Umm, let's see.... because it's supposed to get 96 lbs/ft?

Re: 96 geo metro crankshaft pulley bolt keeps snapping

That came from the factory shop manual, a bolt or nut that requires 200 lbs/ft will usually be and inch and a half in diameter. The common thing for that bolt is to come loose allowing the timing belt sprocket behind it to wobble around, shearing the key. That's why they're LockTited from the factory. Maybe that's what you read, that somebody used 200 lbs/ft to get it loose. Most of that went to breaking the LockTite, not actually loosening the bolt. The highest torque of anything at all on a Metro is 129 for the front axle spindle nut in the center of the brake rotor.
