Turbo Kits

Ive been looking into turbo kits for my 2000 altima 5 speed and have come up empty. Ive found many kits for the KA24DE engine on the 240sx and on the older altima (1997.5 and older). Can anyone tell me if its possible to modify any of these kits to fit my car or is it better to just research and buy parts separatly and have some piping fabricated?

Re: Turbo Kits

you could probably swap in a FWD sr20det for what a turbo kit would cost you.

really? Because I was looking at a turbo for the KA24 DOHC ( 97 Altima) and found one at Nopi.com for about 4k. How much would it cost to swap in a sr2odet ? also where the hell could I find one? o.o;;

http://www.flashoptions.com/product_...10&subcatID=19
this web page sells FWD sr20det's for pretty cheap. the whole front clip is $1600 which includes almost everything you need. otherwise you can get just the engine through them for $800. unless someone charges you $5K to drop the engine in i doubt it will cost more than the car itslef.

Re: Turbo Kits

Ok then how much would it cost to drop in the sr20det into an altima? But more importantly why give up the torque of the KA engine. Why not just buy a turbo kit from ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...spagename=WDVW

this kit usually goes for under $2000 and have a shop modify the piping so it will fit on my 2000 model. It should cost no more than a grand to have this kit installed and say about 500 more to have it tuned properly. grand total of about 3500 dollars. Does anyone know about any problems with the kit offered on ebay. Are those horsepower claims realistic?

Re: Turbo Kits

well the stock ka has the displacement advantage but ultimately, it's a truck engine and is not made to withstand lots of power. unlike the SR series of motors that are more or less race engines and can withstand as much as 600 hp on stok internals.

it's all dependant on what you want. if it were me i'd feel more comfortable with a nissan factory turbocharged engine, rather than turning the NA engine into one.

Hm you have a bit of a good point there. Personally I'm only now starting to familiarize myself with engines and such. Hell I just got my license and car a year ago. Exactly what's the displacement on the SR ? And how much power would you say that the KA -could- withstand w/stock internals ?

Re: Turbo Kits

the sr has a displacement of 2.0 L and i think the KA24 can handle up to 12psi on stock internals. HP figures would be around 300-350.

My point is a simple one. On a FWD car like the altima having more than 300 or so hp is usless. You would have to spend a lot of money on reinforcing the tranny and the torque steer is gonna make the car really hard to launch off the line.

Right now a turbo option is to expensive for me. Im gonna see how much hp i can free up with bolt ons. the Ka is a really restricted engine. Im gonna go with stillen headers next. The car is fun to drive as it is. 5 speed is the only way to go.

Re: Turbo Kits

cadillacs are 300 hp vehicles with lots of torque with the power routed through the front wheels. the srt-4 neon is also FWD and there are kits available for upwards of 350 hp. a nice limited slip differential( which should be standard on an sr20 engine) should greatly help with controlling the torque-steer off the line and in and out of turns. ultimately you're right though, the most optimal platform for high hp is AWD/RWD, but it doesn't mean it won't be fun in a FWD, think of the maxima's(255-265 fwhp) and new acura TL's(270 fwhp), type r integra's, etc.

Re: Turbo Kits

the tl and new maximas are considerably heavier than the altima. And yes it would be a lot of fun but id be broke because id be going through tires mad quick. I got about 70 percent tread left on my rear and next to nothing on the front. Am i killing my clutch?

the srt-4 and saturn ion redline are meant to be performance oriented, are fwd and are considerably lighter than an altima. You should do whatever makes you feel comfortable. i'm just letting you know my

one things for sure I appreciate all the good avice I get on this forum. I just think it'd be a hoot to have a 97 altima with a turbo and anything over 250 at the wheels. The stage 2 and 3 kits sound a bit excessive for a newbie at this tuneing buisness though O.o; I mean geez over 400hp on an altima ? wouldnt that kind of burn off all your tread before you went anywhere. hotimportperformance.com they sell stuff for the srs as well.
