WTF is this hose? ** Pics **
While working on my '96 3.2l today, I noticed a hose wrapped up by the PS pump. Just wondering what is is. In order of the pictures, there's a shot of the end of the hose wrapped up at the pump, a shot of what looks to be a check valve the hose is connected to, then where the hose ends at the intake manifold:
Any ideas? |

Check under your hood for a vacuum hose diagram . Its not on a 94 so i really don't know but if it has vacuum on it while the engine is running I would block it of till you figure it out it may may make your engine run smoother.

Have the same engine; wait til daylight when I can actually SEE something. It gets REAL dark up here at my place at night.
Boy, you must live in salt valley, you have a LOT of rust in that engine bay.

I have a 96 also, and the same hose on mine is connected to the intake manifold on one end, and runs down to my frame on the other end. I thinkit is part of the vaccum control for the shift on the fly hubs. my wife has a 95.5 and the hose is tied up just like yours. but it does not have the shift on the fly. the factory diagram on mine dosen't show it at all.

Now I'm not sure if there's a difference, but if by Shift-On-The-Fly, you mean a switch as opposed to a shifter, I have a shifter (Dunno if Rodeos ever had a "Switch"). And like a dummy, I have not checked to see if it has vacuum while running. I'll check tonight. I've been working on CEL codes lately and just came across this. Thanks guys! EDIT: I've only had the truck for three years. All the rust and corrosion was there when I got it. I bought it off my boss knowing it has a hole in the frame. I'm quite apprehensive about putting too much money into it to fix the CEL due to the frame issue. Otherwise I'd fix her right up. She's just getting ready to turn 160K and she runs great. I might end up selling it for a grand and buying a newer Rodeo. |

Re: WTF is this hose? ** Pics **
Here is what All Data has for a vacuum hose diagram for '96 rodeo (its alot like the '98+ diagram)...
If yours doesnt have push button shift on the fly 4wd then I dunno cuz thats what all that stuff is for. Did any '96-97 models have push button soft?

Re: WTF is this hose? ** Pics **
Nope. I got a 5 Speed manual stick and a transfer case stick. I guess that's what it's for then. Maybe a higher end trim level? Maybe something left over from a Japanese model?
Who knows. Thanks for all the help though. I really apprciate it. Not to say I won't keep reading on. If someone figures it out, please feel free to post it up! |

Re: WTF is this hose? ** Pics **
I have a '96 4x4. The 4x4 shifter is for the TRANSFER CASE ONLY. It's not in 4x4 until the hubs are locked by the vacuum powered SOTF system. There is a switch in the case that activates the SOTF hubs when 4x4 is selected. The first picture is where the tiny air filter for the vacuum should be (looks like it's missing), and the orange and black piece is the one-way check valve, both for the shift-on-the-fly system (see GIZMO42's post - Nice diagram). Hope this helps.

Re: WTF is this hose? ** Pics **
My rodeo has a shift lever for the transfer case. not a button. never seen a rodeo with push button shifting. that would be nice, but not necessary. the lever works great, even at 45 mph.

2nd gen rodeos have the push button SOFT but now that I have manual hubs mine isnt really shift on the fly anymore. The button can be a bad thing though, its right next to the cruise control button. I accidentally pushed the 4x4 button at 75 mph while trying to turn on the cruise control Luckily I dont think the system will even let it try to shift in at that speed.
