Thumbs up 1st auto-X experience

I auto-x'ed for the first time today at the Birch Run Expo Center parking lot (for those of you from flint-area). It was a blast. I did 6 runs, and got completely lost my first 4 LoL it takes some adjustment to follow a cone course vs grass/asphalt. My best time was 54-something seconds, which was a little bit fast compared to everyone else there, but there were some really fast guys. It was a 1/2 mile course, and it kicked ass. My biggest problems were the fact that my Grand Am is soft-as-hell in the front, so I ended up with lots of oversteer, and couldn't stick worth shit on some of the turns. So I ended up losing alot of tread today, but I'm due for new tires, so it was deffinately worth it. It was a really awesome experience though. I just wanted to say it's an awesome sport.

Re: 1st auto-X experience

I'm not sure what that means. I go to Kettering University; and I went with our "Firebirds" car club. Is that some kind of certification or what?

Re: 1st auto-X experience

the DCSCC is a group of car clubs in Southeast Michigan that grouped together to host autocrosses that use a different classification system than SCCA that I think is alot better, here's their website.

It takes a while before you get good at memorizing the course and picking up the visual clues for the next section. The best thing is while you are sitting in the staging lanes is to close your eyes and visualize the whole run a few times.

When you are walking the course it is good to look backwards at the section you just walked through. Sometimes you pick up things that you would have missed only looking in the direction of travel.

Re: 1st auto-X experience

I realiz this is a fairly old thread, but I just raced my first autoX this past weekend and it was a blast! I drove my maxima and the worn out tires were spinning the entire course. I feel like I beat the car up too much, so it was probably also the last time I do it.....
until it comes around here next time.
