Exploring my options

I’m about to buy my first car. I had been planning on buying a BMW E30 M3 but its 8-10grand to even get a decent one so I’m putting that dream off for a few years. And my best friend just bought a E30 325i and I don’t want to copy him. So now I’m exploring my other options. I’m pretty picky and know what I like. Its got to be RWD, light weight and a well balanced performer all around. So I got it down to two cars....so far. The first is the Nissan 91-94 240sx coupe. Its all the things I want and you don’t see the coupes everyday. Plus with a S13 Silvia front end conversion, some nice BBS rims to give it that European edge and a SR20DET swap it would be perfect. The other option I just started looking into is the 944/924. Again on paper it meets all my standards, its fairly cheap and it would be nice to keep it euro seeing as that’s really where my love is. So heres my question to you guys. What do you love about your 944/924? What are their weak and strong points? What kind of potential do their motors have modification wise? I plan to make what ever car I get my daily drive/racer. Most importantly I want it to handle like a champ in autoX/track. However I want it to be able to throw it down straight line wise too.

Thanks for the feedback.

And no lip from you Cbass. Yea haha the BMW Nazi is thinking about buying a Porsche

Re: Exploring my options

Ok i got a few more questions. How is the NA motor different from the turbo? Now i know "its got turbo" but I want more in depth then that. Like I found an add for a nice looking 84 944 really close to me. How expensive would it be to turbo that down the road? Im mean even if I bought a turbo model I would still probably want/need to upgrade the turbo on that anyways right?

making a na a turbo will cost at least twice as much as buying one in the first place.

head, valves, crank, cam, pistons, transmission, brakes, suspension, etc, etc are all different on a turbo.

an '89 944 turbo s or se will do 5.2s 0-62 3s 62-0 and standing 1/4 in high 13's stock. you might think a bimmer has 'near' perfect weight distribution, but a 924/944/968 really does (with the exception of the drivers weight). of all the bimmers i've driven / owned they all handle really well in the dry, but the real test of a car is how well they handle in the wet, and a bimmer will try to bite you in the wet. personally i ENJOY driving in the rain in my 924 (the turbo is a little TOO playful with 250bhp) as the poise and handling is just superb, if a little slow (hence the engine mods).

Re: Exploring my options

So if im going to mod a 944 I should find a cheap turbo one then? If I turbo a 944S would it be better then a 944turbo because the S has 16valves?

Edit: How much HP can the stock 944 turbo internals handle? Does it depend on the year?

go test drive them both and see what you think. i doubt you'll ask this question again once you've driven a good 944 turbo.

as far as i know both the series 1 and series 2 944 turbo's are good for 300bhp before you need to strengthen anything, transmission included. (assuming nothing's already on it's way out or is already 'tired'). if you can find a turbo with the m030 option you'll already have the brakes and suspension that can handle it too.

Re: Exploring my options

Really only 300hp at the crank? I was looking to have a car running that much at the wheels. I figure thats how much ill need to have it in the 12s. What are the week points of the 951 turbo engine that I would need to upgrade?

no, 250bhp (stock) at the crank for high 13's. it's not a lardy-ass yank tank. it only weighs ~1200kg. hp is not everything.

Re: Exploring my options

Ok but I would still need about 300hp at the crank to hit 12s. And I dont know if I would like pushing the car so close to its hp limit.

300bhp is the easy DIY 1st step...

http://www.cannell.co.uk/944%20Turbo.htm

chip, k&n and dv gave 303bhp & 302lb/ft

Re: Exploring my options

Well we will have to wait and see first. Someone else beat me to the car so im waiting to see what happens. Heres the one im trying to get

1987 PORSCHE 944 TURBO
guard red, 175,250 mi, leath int, pb, ps, sunroof, air, 5 spd, pw, 2 dr, p/seats, very fast car, excellent running condition, $4250 OBO but the guy came down to $3200

im sure this other guy will buy the car though, which sucks because this is a great deal.
