if it's loose, dont drive it.

there should be an auto tensioner that automatically keeps tension on the belt as it wears and stretches over time... possibly it's broke.

check the tensioner nut and make sure it hasnt loosened up.

Don't even start it!!!

I'd recommend you get it towed to a dealer or a competent mechanic. If the belt has skipped a tooth, you may well destroy your engine if you just tighten it back up.

Best of luck.

Ok so what do i need to do then? Change the belt? Well i don't know if i should spend anymore money on my stock anymore? I have the b16 but its not installed but its not gonna be installed till the end of march? I need something to drive now and like i said i don't wanna spent too much on my d16 motor. What is the cheapest way of fixin this problem?

Ok i just checked my timing belt and the bottom belt has some tear in it? Like the teeth marks that grips the cam gear.So how much do the timing belt go for? I'm gonna have a friend install it for me.

Belts are expensive at all. I brought my teg to the dealer and changed the timing belts, all the accesory belts and the water pump for $600. they changed all the fluids too for me. (im such a flirt with those boys at the acura dealer lol) the belt on my teg wasnt broke but my car was hitting 100,000 miles and i figured id change it before it did break. that happened to my bmw and it tore the whole engine apart. its hard work changin the belt u have to unmount the whole engine so make sure your friend knows what hes doin because if its attached wrong the car might not even start. best of luck to u. bye

If you want cheap just change the belt. Out here in Ca. I charge about $130.00 labor plus the belt which is about $16-22.00. Buy the cheapest belt you can find as they are all about the same. If you were going to race the car I'd use only top quality racing brands or OE. If you were going to keep the car I would also change the front Camshaft and crankshaft oil seals and waterpump when I did the belt. Whatever you do don't use cheap parts if you're going to keep a car. Fueler

You would charge only $130 for labor? My brother in-law has a 88-91 HB. Not sure what year it is. But its the same engine as my CRXDX. He told me that a mechanic said that they needed to change their timing belt and that it was going to cost $400.

It sounds like it is just the belt. An actual Honda timing belt should cost you between $50-90. If your not going to drive on that engine much longer thats all Id do. Hope the guy that doing it for you knows what hes doing. Have him check the tensioner while hes in there. That price sounds good just for the belt change. The reason dealerships charge $500 or so to change the timing belt is because they change all other belts and the water pump...sometimes even the tensioner while thier in there. Its pretty much just preventative maintinence and it saves you alot of labor to just have it all done at once rather than go back and pay the same labor when the water pump or something else goes out later. I know, Im having all that done as we speak. Blew a head gasket and Im having everything that can be done...done while thier at it.

it should only take about 2 hours to do a timing belt on a honda....Mechanics charge flat rate per hour. So if they were to charge you 400 bucks for the labor, they're ripping you off.
