97 Escort 2.0L: P0320

My son drives a 97 Escort. A couple weeks ago, it overheated and died while he was driving and now won't start at all. It turns over, but no start. And it doesn't even sound good turning over...seems slow and dry. He hasn't maintained it well...it overheated because it was low on both coolant and oil. I'm hoping to get it running for a few weeks while we look for a replacement but I'm not gonna put a lot of work into it.

It is reporting P0320 and P1744. P1744 is a TCC code and I suspect it won't cause a no start. In fact, I'm assuming it won't prevent the car from running and driving although it will effect performance and economy.

Apparently, the P0320 indicates the PCM isn't getting a valid engine speed signal. The usual suspects are the crankshaft position sensor (CKP) and camshaft position sensor (CMP).

I checked the easy things. An inline spark tester indicates spark on three cylinders...I skipped testing the fourth but I assume it's ok. There's 36 psi at the fuel rail. The timing belt is intact and turning the camshaft when cranked (although I didn't verify timing). After removing a spark plug, I inserted a wooden dowel with some paper towel taped to the end while my son cranked the engine. My intent was to confirm the injectors were firing evidenced by the wet paper towel; but the paper towel stayed dry. After pulling the plugs, they had a faint odor of gas but appeared to be dry. So I'm suspecting the injectors are not firing.

Would P0320 prevent the injectors from pulsing while spark continued to be provided?

Any guidance is appreciated.
