Saw them run at Norwalk

For the "doubting Thomases"... (:-

There were 4 G8 GTs running in the racing program at the TriPower Nationals last weekend. A couple of automatic cars were running consistent 14.0s/13.90s. Two 6-speed cars were at 13.60 and 13.65, respectively.

These cars were ALL "box stock", and looking good. No GXPs yet...

We shall see!

Were these G8 GTs stock or production cars? On the latter was that 6 speed auto?

I'm curious to see how well the LS3 GXP does when it comes out.

Completely stock (show room, unmodified), to the best of my knowledge. 6-speed manual.

Re: Saw them run at Norwalk

Probably the 6 speed automatic. I recall Pontiac decided not to go with the 6 speed Tremec manual in the GT models and I'm quite sure no 2008 GT models have one either and were delivered from the factory with the 6 speed auto, GM RPO Code MYC. But one is planned for the 2009 GXP model as an option. See link below.

Re: Saw them run at Norwalk

I've got an 08 G8 GT... no manual option, only 6 speed auto.

Pontiac originally said there would be an option between the two... but... nope. Changed their minds... fuckers. I didn't want to wait for the GXP to get a G8... so I just went with the GT.

Fun car, just don't get into an accident with them. GM has no parts available. Mine has been in the shop for 2 months waiting for parts. Good times.

Re: Saw them run at Norwalk

Thanks for the info Matt. I test drove a '08 G8 GT and was very impressed with the performance and looks especially compared to the GTO. I'm shopping around. I noticed quite a few used ones nationwide. The Dodge Challenger SRT8 is another option but the cost is way up there around $40K versus the G8.

So what happened and how bad was the damage?

Re: Saw them run at Norwalk

To make a long story short, I came off a off-ramp on a freeway that had just been recently finished being built. I was coasting off the freeway, when the intersection I come up to changed to green so I carried my momentum (35-40mph, it's a very large intersection so you can do a lazy wide turn) in a left hand turn when I hit some sort of grease or slick liquid in the road.

I've no idea what the heck it was.. all I know is the ass end came out on me and I tried to correct it by adding a tad opposite steering and applying a bit of throttle when the front wheels lost total control from possibly hitting more of the stuff. And the car whipped around on me and ended up backing over a center island with a curb about 8" high.

The right rear suspension was all tweaked and pushed the whole wheel assembly into the front of the rear wheel well.

All in all, a new rear subframe was needed plus new suspension for the right rear. A new 19" wheel, and tire along with some minor body work to work out the damage. In total it was about $5500 worth of 'mother F'er'.

Problem is, one of the parts damaged is a knuckle assembly for the suspension, which I guess GM never figured would need replacing. So... nobody knows where to get one. GM seems dumbfounded as to how to get me a simple part. So the car has been sitting waiting for that one part, so they can start putting it back together.

I'm not too happy with GM at the moment. I'm going to push my insurance company to total the car out. If GM can't supply me with parts for a brand new car, not something they stopped making 15 years ago, then I don't want it. Not to mention, I'm paying payments and insurance on a car that I can't use... so if they can't fix it I don't want to pay for it.

Seems fair to me.

Other than that... great car... just don't break it.

Re: Saw them run at Norwalk

They've got a sport shifter/tap shift.

They could of done paddle shifters like in the Corvettes seeing as it's the same transmission, but no... that'd require some form of common sense.
