Mercedes-Benz sure knows how to inspire spirit and soul. The F400 seems to combine the essence of older MBs, like the 300 SL, with new and moving technology from the SLR and Vision cars.
The whole damn thing is electronic: drive-by-wire controls both steering and braking, 'active body control' (ABC) and 'active hydropneumatic suspension' (AHP) govern lean/pitch, 'electronic stability program' maintains traction. Most importantly, the F400 has 'active camber control' which as you can see in some of the photos, actually tilt the camber up to 20 degrees during turns so that the wheels and tires take away the pressure from the body, which in turn remains flat. Of course, regular tires would be useless at 20 degrees of negative camber, so specialty versions were concocted by DiamlerChrysler and Pirelli. The engine of choice is a 3.2L V-6 (where they got the number 400, I have no idea) with a sequentronic transmission with wheel mounted shifters. What is the end result? 1.28G of lateral force. |

I guess that refers to the handling of that crazy camber control! As in: Carving up the road! |
