Highway/Motorway driving economy question

Hey all

I’m not much of a petrolhead so I apologise for any stupid remarks.
I wanted your advice on something. I need to get another car mainly for work commuting which is 100 miles a day on 90% highway. I’m going to go diesel purely for the cost savings but I am undecided on the size of engine. From what I understand, while on paper the 1.6 diesel engines offer more economy, but in reality and travelling around 70mph, a stronger engine (e.g. 2.0 diesel) would perform equally, if not outperform the smaller engine due to the strain on the smaller. Is that correct?

Thanks
Alan

Re: Highway/Motorway driving economy question

On the highway, with a properly geared car, all modern cars of a similar weight get about the same fuel economy. I get the same highway fuel economy in my 300 hp twin turbo 3.0L BMW as I do in my 1.5L Mazda.

The 2.0L will probably be more satisfying to drive and get similar highway economy.

Re: Highway/Motorway driving economy question

I agree. I had a 2006 Jaguar S-Type with the 300 HP 4.1 Liter V8 that got the same fuel economy that my current 2015 Mazda CX-5 Touring AWD with a 2.5 Liter 4 Cylinder does.
