Who makes the best '69/70 mustang ?
I saw a 1:1 fastback '69 stang today, all in deep shiny black, on grey/high polish torq thrusts - and I decided I need to build one!
What are the available kits like? particularly the mach 1/Boss/cobra jet ones? And who makes nice torq thrusts and tyres to suit? |

Revell makes a decent '69 Mustang Mach I, but the headlight area is a bit funky. Otherwise it's very nice. They make a '70 Boss 429 and have made a Boss 302 as well. Torque Thrusts come in their Baldwin Motion kits, the Stars and Stripes/old Owens-Corning Corvette kits, just to name a few. AMT makes a '69 Mustang that at first glance looks good, but it's underscale and has detail problems (the kit is based on a '65)...but the headlight area is the one are that's better than the Revell kit.

Didn't one of the big resin caster offer a corrected body for the Revell '69 Mustang? Maybe either AAM, Modelhaus, or Replicas & Miniatures Co. of Maryland?
And as far as Torq Thrusts are concerned, Bob there did mention some of the best, but he forgot the ones in the Revell Deuce coupe kit. Those, along with the Goodyear Blue Streak tires they're wrapped in, are some of the best.

I'm currently building the AMT 69, overall so far it's a good kit. the cobra jet engine went together better than the one in the 68 shelby, and looks better too. It's a shame that the suspension is basically non existent, you simply glue the wheels to the chassis, which is difficult seen as I don't have the metal rear axle (I don't think I got one).
I hear the 1970 boss 429 by revell is a very good kit with minimal fit problems, and a great set of custom parts. And torque thrusts? there's a 17 inch set in the Alternomad caprice wagon kit, along with some nice interior bits and an injected chev V8. The aforementioned owens corvette also has some nice wide rims, but basically any set from any muscle car will do. If you get the AMT kit, you can fit the wheels to the low profile custom tyres that come with the kit, which are nice and wide and should fit any decent 15 inch rims.

Re: Who makes the best '69/70 mustang ?
Why do you want a `69 or `70? To my knowledge those body shapes were different? A `69 would look alot better then a `70 would in black with torque thrusts

No, same body style, different front sheetmetal. The 1970 had inboard headlights with vents where the lights on the 69 used to be. the 69 had the traditional mustang styling.

Re: Who makes the best '69/70 mustang ?
Ah ok, wasn't sure on the front sheetmetal differences. So whats available in a 1969 model then? I don't like the inboard lights, takes some of the aggression out of the front end.
Boss 302? |

This is a 1969 Mustang.
This is a 1970 Mustang. The Boss Mustang (both 302 and 429) was available in both years, and 1969 was the last year for the Shelby Mustang. Of course, the 1969 Shelby Mustang had some radically restyled bodywork.

A 1969 Boss 302 has never been produced. Monogram did a passable 1970 Boss 302 and an excellent 1970 Boss 429. I've heard of guys combining the Monogram 1970 Boss 302 with the Revell 1969 Cobra Jet kit to creat 1969 Boss 302's.
There may also be a resin conversion kit available, but I'm not too sure. Either Fred Cady Design or Keith Marks does aftermarket decals for a 1969 Boss 302. Don't hold me to that, though.

same body style, but with the roofline you see in the 1970 pictures. Called a sportsroof by ford, everyone else just stuck with fastback. I believe keith marks makes the boss 302 decals.
