2004 deville wont start after smoking under hood??

I was putting in gas & all of a sudden smoke which i thought was steam from overheating came out from under the car/hood, semed to be more concentrated towards the passenger side.
i turned it off & lifted the hood ..there was no smoke anywhere & no overheating.

after a minute, i started it & it started fine ..but the gas was reading like it was empty , on the "lo". I turned it off again and wanted to further investigate & could find nothing out of the ordinary.

the car recently cracked 50k & is out of warranty for sure.

when i went to start it again, it acted as if it was out of gas , wont turn over & the fule gage is still reading "lo". I even put more gas in & still nothing.

any ideas on what this could be ? .

The car is being towed right now back to my house. I have tonight/tomorrow to look it over , then its going to have be towed to a garage , I work out of state & I do not want my wife & baby to be w/out a vehicle while I am at work/

I cant pull the codes , nothing happens. The temp gage reading seems to be stuck at halfway & its still saying the car is out of gas.

Check the battery and associated cables for a short.

Update:

removed the backseat , checked battery & cables , decided to unhook battery for 15 minutes.
Once hooked back up the car started but was saying check tire pressure & only one of the 4 tp lights was working. I took it for a drive & now the other 3 tp lights are working again.
so far it seems to be running fine. Im hesitant since this seemed like too simple of a fix , and the whole thing that happened in the beginning with the smoke from under the hood & the sound of overheating.
The instrument panel seems to be fully functioning as the gas gage is showing the correct amount of gas & the temp gage is working again.
Is there something else i should look at , I would hate to have my wife & baby breakdown , especially with all out areas of no cell service around here.

Im no mechanic , but manage to fix things here and there , but these new cars are getting to be so complicated.

I would be very cautious here when smoke was an indication of the problem, no telling what may have shorted, if this was caused by an electrical issue I would not chance just going forward with this, if the smoke could be traced to an oil, coolant, leak issue, or the water from the ac dripped on the exhaust causing steam, that is not problematic.
