Re: interference engine???

Yes, they are an interference motor. I have a 4g64 in my 90 Ram 50, and the previous owner had snapped the t-belt and 4 valves were toast.

Still going to do some damage. Its very easy (much too easy) to bend valves. I belt valves on a 4G63 by putting the timing belt on wrong and turning it by hand, and I didnt even feel anything until it was already too late (an expensive learning experiance). Sometimes you can get lucky, but its EXTREMELY rare.

yeah.. it doesnt really matter how fast your going.. your valves will have a new shap if your belt goes

92 Mighty Max 2.4l 4g64 is a non interference engine. Gates Corporation provides a chart online.

Re: interference engine???

Hi there,

and thanks for the Gates link. Just spent 30 mins on their site searching - but failed to see anything telling me: 4G64 is/not non-/interference, despite the link offering to find out just that. (?...)
Anyone else with a definite answer? could mean the diff. between $500 or $1,700 AUD repair, as me old timing belt went on my lucky day, Fri 13th. ....
Talked to two mech's, so far, they both said, can't tell till pulling apart (=and well, what can you do then, but say: YES. Please repair and charge me whatever you see fit...)
SO: Is the 4G64 non- or interference?

Ta, Walter

Re: interference engine???

Sorry to hear walt

This thread is 5 years old and I don't think anyone is going to respond to you from the previous posters.

My friend had 99 spyder eclipse with a 4g64 and it was messed when the timing skipped. Not sure but i'm guessing its an interference engine. The 4g63 def is too. So I'm saying yes it is.

Re: interference engine???

Thanks, Stevie, good onya for replying!

I did persist in my research and on ye olde Wikipedia I found the entire list of engines with relevant info.
The confusion seems to stem from the fact that the first 4G64 actually were 8valve, non-interference, but the majority of them 16 valve and interfered with!.
Only thing I haven't worked out is how to find out which mine is: Mitsu Express, '90, which is 1st year of them having been built..

Thanks,cheers, and Greetings from Bne.

This is an old thread but I must respond. I will hold your hand. Go to http://www.gates.com/brochure.cfm?br...3487&go=TBHome scroll to the bottom and locate "Got an Interference Engine?
Find Out Now" Click on "Find Out Now"(new page will open),read "The vehicle shown is not an interference engine unless noted "Interference Engine Application" in the comments column of the Cam Belt application section." and enter your vehicle information.
