06 montana power steering hard to turn

Hi, I have a 2006 pontiac montana sv6 AWD

Once everything warms up the steering looses power at low rpm and starts making whistling noises around the steering wheel and can also be herd outside the car somewhere.

I have just replaced the power steering pump and flushed the system. I also replaced the belt and tensioner at the same time.

Air has been bled from the system and i have checked everywhere for leaks and cant see any and im not loosing any fluids. But I still have a lack of power and the whistle noise sounds like it is sucking air into the system somewhere...WTF!

I still get some small bubbles coming up in the reservoir even tho i have bled the system soo many times now..

What is going on?

I am at a loss, can someone please help??

Thanks in advance

If you have bubbles in the fluid in the reservoir, you have a leak somewhere......

Re: 06 montana power steering hard to turn

So all leaks have been taken care of and the system has been pressure tested. No leaks..

Still have the same problem at low rpm..

A friend said that some cars have a kind of dual stage pressure system that switches to low pressure at higher speeds to give better cornering feel and higher pressure at low speeds to assist turning tight turns.

Does anyone know if the 06 Montana has this and how I need to go about fixing it?

I don't think the Montana has "variable assist" steering. It's very possible you have a problem with the steering rack. The "whistle" noise is probably pressurized fluid leaking past a seal or seals inside the gear, causing low assist at low rpm. I hope you bought a OEM pump, because the cheap remans are crap.

Did you replace the pump because it was leaking, or because of the low assist issue?

Our van had hard steering, sometimes referred to as a 'morning' or first start up issue that would go away as it warmed up. Had 225,000 Kms on it. Your mileage?

When the van was in the shop for a trans rebuild I had them swap out the rack with a Fenco reman unit; - about $215 for the rack. (You need the sub frame dropped a bit to get the rack out).

You are near Whistler??, so you might be able to pick one up from Lordco or PartSource.

Solved the problem with hard steering. Something to consider.
