Bravada got hot
Ok, my dad had been using my Bravada while his car was down. The other night it quit on him and had to be towed. The garage says it's head gasket and they won't change it, they say they will only change the engine and want $1900 to do that. My dad later told me that it had gotten hot a few times before. I got it towed back here and when it is running it sounds horrible and blows white smoke. I was wondering how much of a job it is to change head gaskets without pulling the engine? Also, could anyone give me a ballpark answer on what it might cost to get heads tested at a machine shop. I don't have money to be spending a lot for a garage to fix it. If I can't fix it, I'll probably just try to sell it as is.

Severely overheating the engine can destroy it.
Sorry. Will you get any warranty with the $1900 change out? |

They didn't say anything about a warranty, but if I had to guess I would say no. I don't have the $1900 anyhow. Are you saying going through the work of pulling the heads and getting them tested would be a waste? Sounding like I'll be selling it the way it is.

You may not be aware of it but 1997 was the last of the most trouble free viscous clutch 4x4 transfer cases.
Your '96 has one too. How much do you want for your Bravada? I run my '92 in the winter as it's the most surefooted 4x4 in the snow and ice I've ever driven besides the '97 that was totaled in a wreck.. And that's parking Cornbread Red through the winter.

From what I've seen blazers and such that need work go for $700-800 and up neighborhood around here, but possibly negotiable. I'm not sure what condition the engine is in after overheating, but it was changed a couple years back. The original went bad and had one put in with 43,000 miles on it. I also had brake lines done last year, had garage do it since I was in the process of moving. Also has 2 new O2 sensors and new gas tank/straps/fillerneck, oh and a new MAF.
