What am I going to need to do to change from my points to electronic.

Re: Changing from points to electronic
You can get a later model HEI and adapt it for your use or go to www.summitracing.com or www.jegs.com ! Both of these sites sell not only the Petronix conversion kit but also several other brands ( Mallory, Accel , etc. ) so you can comparison shop between the different ones .

Ok let me rephrase the question. What parts beside the distributor should I go with. I've seen the stuff on summit

The stock GM HEI ignition system is just about the best out there. It was used from '74-'75 through into the 1990s on all GM distributor-type engines. Your cheapest and best bet is to replace the original distributor with a rebuilt or used HEI unit. Be sure to get the distributor cap too. It has the ignition coil in it. Virtually any non - computer HEI system will do. Check at your local wrecking yard (used) or your autp parts store (rebuilt). It will be just as good as Summit or Jegs for most applications, and cheaper, too. The wiring is super easy. All you need it a 12volt power wire from the ignition switch. Do not use your original coil wire, since that has about 9 volts, not 12, and will not produce the best results. You will also need new plug wires, too. If you wish to maintain the stock appearance, you can get the under-cap conversion kits, too. They will provide you with everything you need for the change. Unless your distributor is worn totally out, there is no need to change the distributor or coil. |

If you go with one of the conversion kits , you'll get everything needed to complete the job . Just read the instructions carefully and do exactly as it says and you will be good to go .

Re: Changing from points to electronic
I have used the pertronix ignitor kit in about five cars, they are easy to install and very good, never had an issue with them.
