Re: fault code list
Year? Engine? Miles? When was the last time you did a tune-up? How long was the light on? Has the light been flashing?
P0300 is difficult to track down because it has so many causes. It can be caused by weak or no spark, or too much or too little fuel. P0420 means that the catalytic convertor isn't working as efficiently as it should be. It could have been damaged by your misfire condition. Bank1 is the driver side exhaust, bank2 is the passenger side exhaust. After they meet at the y-pipe, it is then refered to as Bank1 the rest of the way back. |

Its a 1998 with 152,000 miles. Last tuneup was last summer, but I did just the basics, plugs, filters and general service, not as in depth as your posts on here for a REAL tune up.
As far as the light is concerned, its not on constantly. Occasionally, when i am driving on the highway, I can hear the engine rev up a bit, and watch the rpm climb to about 2500, but there is no change in speed. So basically I have an increase in how hard the engine is working, but no increase in speed. Then a few seconds after that begins, the SES light will begin flashing and then after a few flashes remain on. Once I feel and hear this condition, I just back out of it until the engine normalizes and then continue on. The light will stay on from as little as about 20 min. to 2 days, but it always goes away. I have yet to find a certain conditon that always causes it, so it is truely random. So, having said all of that, do you think that a full service tune up is the place to start? Is it possible that the inefficency in the cat could have caused the misfire? Thanks for the information on bank 1 and 2. Learned something new today! thanks again....Steve |

Re: fault code list
Being that the light isn't on constantly, I would start with the P0300 code and hope that the P0420 is just caused by the excess fuel entering the cat. during the misfires.
A bad catalytic converter can cause the problems you have, but I would recommend doing the tune-up items you skipped, because it is time for them to be replaced, anyway, and the cat. is too expensive to replace if it isn't bad. |
