I guess it depends who your talking to.. True coilovers have threaded shocks that the spring sits on, the better ones are designed so that everything works together valving, spring rates, etc.., for the best possible performance, this may not be the case for some of the cheaper kits how ever so be ware.

The other type of coilover most people are refering to are kits like Ground control, skunk2, etc.. Basically what they are, are threaded sleeves that slide down over regular shocks like Konis, Tokico, or even stock. You can have some performance issues with these types of "coilovers" becuase the shock isnt really deisgned for that specific spring.

Hope this helps a little.

Thanks man that helps me alot. So as far as true coilovers go I'm lookin' to spend @ $1000 for a good set? Also what else do I need besides the coilovers and braces to complete my suspension?

Really good tires, camber kits are always great to have, tire pressure guage, and lots of time to play with you suspension to get it tuned out right.

And yes.. $1000+ (maybe a little cheaper) will be a pretty decent set of coilovers.. Id stay away from the Ricky Racer specials for 400$ or what ever they are.. Those probably arent great for performance..
