Ouch.

I put 35 - 24 lb stones on my tail gate at a time to unload from the bed. Man that would hurt if it failed.

They stopped using the old cables in mid-october of '03. Depends on when your truck was built. Mine was built Oct 24 of '03, so I'm not sure if I sholud be worried or not! There should be a sheet in your glovebox with the build date on it.

In general, I wouldn't expect a problem until several years after the build date. They CAN corrode, and fail under a heavy load. GM is getting the new cables out, but it takes time to come up with so many millions of cables.

Re: This Is Your Lucky Day

check the ends of the cable strands where the fittings hold them to the truck, if they have epoxy on them, change them, period.

Re: This Is Your Lucky Day

A friend and I were sitting on his tailgate when one of the cables broke. You would have never known it was going bad by looking at it. It broke right in the center of the cable. We were glad to see a recall on this later, to shut our friends up about putting to much weight on the tailgate.
