Noise in Rear end - 98 tacoma trd sr5
I have a '98 tacoma trd sr5 with the e-locking rear diff. I am hearing a whirling noise and some clunking in the rear end. I jacked up the rear end and ran it. in 1st gear and ideling, it made more noise when I stopped the right wheel from turning and let the left turn freely. I then put it in 3rd gear and it made nise all the time. Any ideas on how to figure out what is wrong and how to fix it?

Could be something going on with the e-locker. I would have it looked at.

Re: Noise in Rear end - 98 tacoma trd sr5
Update: I pulled the right rear drum off of the truck and the axle has play. It moves about an 1/8 inch in & out. There is no play up & down. Is this play suposed to be there? I have checked my manual and there is no mention of it.

I would drain the diff and look for shavings before tearing too deep into things.
There is usually a small amount of end play in the axle shaft, but not a lot. Are the flange bolts on the end of the axle tight? One last thing, are you sure it is an e-locker? |

Does the left axle have the same amount of play? If not 1/8" is too much play. I would pull the axle shaft and inspect the bearing and retainer.

Update: Yes it is an e-locker. I pulled both drums off and the left has more play than the right. I also used a stethescope and the left seems to have the noise. It looks like it's the left bearing, so I will pull it all apart this evening. Thanks for all your help.
