Re: came across this photo in my collection

You rock tak!

That is the Clinic Model which was only painted yellow for a short period of it's life. Supposedly there was an owner debating between that color and silver. He desperately wanted to see a complete car in yellow so, although he didn't want to spend the money, Ron Dennis ultimately had the Clinic Model painted to satisfy this customer. In the end they chose silver.

You took this at the Beaulieu Museum - here's the only other photo I've seen of the car there.

In fact, looking in my collection (not counting screenshots from videos) this is really only the 4th photo I have of the Yellow Clinic. One of the four is very small, and one shows the car mostly obscured by chassis #004.

Thanks as always for sharing your treasures.

Yes it is the first prototype - really it's not a prototype though, more of a mockup meant to show the major design elements. It was not a "runner" as they call them. This was the car presented at the Sporting Club in Monaco in 1992 at the F1s unveiling party. It was later repainted burgundy and may have also be blue at one point in it's life. I have never seen photographic proof of that, but I do have a drawing of it done in blue and there was an article that mentioned it as well. Sadly the Clinic Model hasn't been seen publicly since that time spent at the Beaulieu. I do hope that McLaren has chosen to preserve it somewhere rather than scrap it.

It's my understanding that the foglamps were taking up space that was needed to feed cool air through the nose of the car, thus they were scrapped from the design. I know that XP1 wore them, it is possible that XP2 did at the begining of it's life (no solid proof). They were last seen on XP3, but disappeared from the nose of that car sometime during the development process and were not seen again on any other F1s to my knowledge.
