Exclamation 87tc stalls when you shift gears

I have a 1987 tc that keeps stalling out when I shift gears and when I tap the gas a little, could a clogged fuel filter cause this. Also there is a whinning sound coming from around the gas tank(fuel pump fighting clogged fuel filter?)

sounds like your fuel pump, but it could be a number of things. could be your fuel filter, idle speed control or idle air control. i had something similar do that to my buddys 91 town car and it turned out to be the idle air control. check those parts. it might be one of those.

let me ask you this, when you start the car in park, does it run nice or does it sound like it wants to stall as soon as you start it??? let me know.

When I first start the car it idles kind of high, then two seconds later it idles low. When it idles low sometimes it will surge like high idle then low. Either way once it idles down then it wants to stall when you shift gears or when you tap the gas.

that sounds exactly like your idle air control has gone bad. the symptoms you are telling me is exactly what my buddys 91 town car did and his 88 chrysler new yorker. get your idle air control checked out. that sounds like your problem.

absolutly. always try with the simplest things first. if that works, then you will be ok. Eventually, it will wear out but if you can get a couple months out of it then go for.

also, i would recommmend to put some good fuel treatment into your engine once a month (if you don't do so already).
