'98 Contour LS w/ bad tranny
My Contour has a bad tranny (again). I took it to a trusted mechanic and after looking at it and diagnosing it, he told me that he would not fix it, even if I gave him the $2500 it would cost to replace it. I agree with him; I don't think it's worth fixing this car.
So my question now is this: How much can I expect to sell this car for (for parts or for anyone who wishes to replace the tranny) as it is in good condition, except for the second and fourth gears on the transmission? Mileage is just a hair over 100K. Thanks for any help/suggestions |

Re: '98 Contour LS w/ bad tranny
What motor, condition of car, etc will determine the value.
Just to get an idea, an SVT with a bad tranny goes for about $1500-2000. Id going to assume you have the I4 motor. I bet you could get $500-800 for it. At least thats all I would be willing to pay for it. I honestly try and stay away from the automatic CD4E trans thats used in the contour. Nothing but problems. 5 speed is where its at.

Re: '98 Contour LS w/ bad tranny
I say about 500.00.Transmission shops will not rebuild that transmission,Ford is picky on this transmission. There is a plastic drum inside and the ground wires have to be in the right spot or that drum will melt if the ground wires are in the wrong spots. The transmission is a pain in the but to remove thanks to Ford designers.Ford loves to make their vehicles to be a pain in the butt to work on and do 6 month changes on parts.
