I value my head, so I wont throw a leg over a bike for any reason without a helmet on.

I ALWAYS wear my helmet! Always! I think it is because I value my brain. I don't know. I think it is a very hard thing to survive without one (Although I know a few people that I think do go on without one.)
About 1 1/2 years ago Pennsylvania repealed the manditory helmet law in this state. If you follow the rules (either MSF graduate or 2 years licensed riding experience) you can go riding helmet-less. A group that I previously belonged to actually protested against the no-helmet law. We did an "undie" ride. Everyone rode through the city (Pittsburgh) wearing nothing but underwear (and a helmet) of course. People used body paint to write things like "At least my head is protected" and "I always wear my helmet" on themselves. It got some really great media attention, infact I think I still have some pictures of one of the organizers riding around in her underwear that day. You all know her as saturntangerine. |

As my post (which was moved) said, I wear my helmet because I might want to think someday.

Re: Helmets: Do You Wear One?
Always wear mine. I went over the bars about 2 weeks ago after being cut off by a drunk late at night. My head had the initial impact. Only thing that happened was a broken mirror on the bike, and a beat up helmet. Worth the $200 all the way!!

There's some of us that learned the hard way. I was in the parking lot across the street, went down and ate a concrete parking block with the side of my head, cracked my skull, caused my brain to bleed and because of that, I was unable to continue with studys (I had a 4.0GPA premed) and went to work. I've finally made it back to where I can think clearly enough to reenroll, but my memory is only a quarter of what it used to be. This was a 5-10mph wreck, no other broken bones, minor scrapes (though I did tear the cartilage in my right ear). There's no reason for that amount of damage to be done in such a small accident. I for one don't want to know what could have happened. I got lucky, but I'm not about to push my luck too much (was back up on a bike 2 mo after the crash) and I went out, bought a nice helmet that I don't mind wearing, and even when I run to the hardware store two blocks down, it's on my head. Had I worn one the night I went down, I could have avoided more than $7k in hospital bills, brain damage, and a f'd up ear.
