Need advice in buying a sport bike.
I'm new to the who motorcycle scene, but just recently got my permit and am looking for a bike of my own rather then to keep borrowing my father's. I have found a 92 Suzuki Katana 750 for $1,300. Is this a good bike, are there any problems I should be aware of? What should I look for when going to look at this bike? Also is a 750 enough or too much for a beginner with some experience?
Thanks, Craig

well i went from a 250cc after 3 months i went right too my 750cc so if you've got some time and will respect the power untill you feel you can safely push it harder. So as far as a 750cc i think its ok most disagree with me probbly. Also i'm not a pro about the Katana never heard anything wrong with it though and looks like price is ok. So i'd wait till you can find some more feedback from other members. Good luck and ride safe.

Re: Need advice in buying a sport bike.
I had a guy at work offer to sell me his 76 Honda 250 for $200. I didn't really think it would be worth it though even though it is cheap, cause of the fact that it hasn't been started since 99, and I don't think a 250 would be enough to move my 6' 1'', 205 pound ass.

The Katana is a "tamer" sportbike, so even a 750 should be okay. You're pretty large, so you might be physically more comfortable on the larger bike. You said you have some experience, so even though I usually recommend no larger than a 600 for a starter bike, if you can respect the power, you will be okay. Give it a shot... if it doesn't work out like you'd hoped, then you can usually resell without a problem.

Re: Need advice in buying a sport bike.
Put $300 dollars inthe bank.Take the $1000and go shopping for a brand spanking new 1000ccor bigger. Most dealers will finance almost anybody.Don't forget to look at Harley.A new rider on a new bike is more comfortable.Dont be afraid of a motorcycle'RESPECT it.Most dealers will treat you like a king.

Well I'm not looking to spend a lot of money, let alone financing something. I just don't have the extra cash like that, but I can swing a couple grand, but no more.
Oh, and thanks Tangie! That's the info I was looking for.

From my experience, older Katana's usualy suffer from lack of maintence issues. I have seen quite a few that need a good going over. IE chains, sprockets, brakes, oil,, cracked plastics, etc. All in all the Katana is a decent, stable platform.
