Unhappy 2001 ram 1500 transmission not shifting

I have a 2001 ram 1500 with a 5.2L engine. The truck has 84000 miles on it. Recently the transmission quit shifting into 1st or 2nd gear on take off unless I manully shifted into 1st gear, however sometimes even manually shifting into 1st gear it will only shift down to 2nd. Drive, overdrive and reverse works fine. I have replaced the transmission filter and fluid. The fluid level when checked with the engine hot and transmission in neutral is o.k.. Could this be a valve body problem or will the transmission need a complete overhaul.

It might be something as simple as a sensor, but an overhaul might be the answer too. Is your check engine light on?

I recently had a similar problem with the tran not shifting properly and it ended up being the speed output sensor, cost aobut $12 and easy to switch out yourself

Re: 2001 ram 1500 transmission not shifting

Well today I purchased a code reader which produced code P1756 which translates to governor pressure not equal to target at 15-20 psi. I know that the code came from the tansmission. Any suggestions on how to correct the problem? Yes The check engine light was on.

Re: 2001 ram 1500 transmission not shifting

this is a common failure... we have seen these governer pressure sensors fail often. most codes are governer pressure sensor volts too high or low, governer pressure sensor not equal to target.. Most of the time we replace the governer pressure sensor and soleniod.. I would recommend you to fix this problem if not you will end up burning the clutches in the trans... The trans pan needs to be removed....the sensor is bolted to the valve body and is located on the pass front side of the valve body

thanks hunda. here is another twist to the plot. today went went to the parts store to get another filter to change it out, and everything was fine. no shift problems everything seemed fine. would the govener sensor fail intermittantly like that?? one day it works next it doesn't??

not really, unless you have a intermittent connection problem, or a leaking valve body seal..

I have 2001 dodge ram . The codes kept saying governer pressure problems. A local tranny shop replaced both units twice. Still the code, and as soon as engine started the the code was set again.
Finialy i drove it several days in limp mode. Then rechecked codes, now there was also an. oxygen senser code. so I unpluged both oxygen sensers and reset codes and started the engine and to my surprize no tranny codes . I inspected the oxygen sensers and found the rear one had a little damage {maybe a rock hit it} it look minor however i replaced it . Cleared all codes , now every thing works fine.
Maybe this will help some one .

Question Re: 2001 ram 1500 transmission not shifting

I have been having a very similar problem with my 2000 1500. Sometimes the tranny will start out in low gear but never come out of 1st. When i re-start the engine a few times it will feel like it is slipping and I have to manually pull it into 1st, but after I get going it shifts just fine. This is obviously an electrical problem. The scanner just says "eletrical short" or "internal failure" but other than this problem the tranny is VERY strong. Can ANYONE give me some advice?? I'm not a transmission mechanic, I'm used to dealing with EVERYTHING else. I replaced the transmission about a year and a half ago with one from a salvage yard that only had 20k miles.

Re: 2001 ram 1500 transmission not shifting

Crawl under the driver side toward the front of your tranny...it's facing almost straight down...you cant miss it. 1" deepwell socket works best. You will lose a small amount of fluid.
