1) Have your tires check, and speed balanced.

Re: 540 1997 steering wheel shakes
These cars and earlier 5 and 7 series cars, use a tension or thrust arm in the front suspension geometry, which has a large rubber busing on the end that mounts to the chassis. When this bushing wears, the suspension is able to move forward and aft more than is normal and any slight out of round or out of balance wheel will magnify the movement into the classic 50-65mph shimmy. Have the bushings checked, replaced if needs be and a good balancing of your wheels and all will be good...

Yup- sound like thrust arm bushings to me.
Don't tighten them too much when installing or they'll bind.

Re: 540 1997 steering wheel shakes
These 540's and 740's series have two lower ball joints the one that goes from the spindle to the back (the other goes to the middle of the car) will cause this problem now once you done installing it do not tight the bushing part until the weight of the car is completely resting on the ground that is to prevent bushing from twisting and fail prematurely

Re: 540 1997 steering wheel shakes
tyres , and car suspension system is the root cause of this type of vibration
