Limp Home Valve Malfuntion (P2106)?

My kia sorento 2008.. has been great until 3 weeks ago there is a whining sound when I drive over 40mph (which is most of the time) Then today when I was coming home the check engine light came on and so I stopped at the Auto Zone.. they coded me and then said they didn't know what it meant.. Please can someone give me ideas on the whining sound and what the Limp Home Valve Malfuntion is? It is still under warrenty.. I just do now want to go in and they try to do anything but fix it. Thanks Elli

Re: Limp Home Valve Malfuntion (P2106)?

It sounds like a bad Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) system, or drive-by- wire system.

Any lost signal from the Electronic Throttle body, Throttle Position Sensor(TPS), and electronic accelerator pedal could trigger a Limp mode.

If the ETC system is good, the computer detected a problem with the engine or transmission, it will trigger a Limp mode as a Safe guard from further damage.

The whining could be as simple as an idler pulley.

If bought new, it might have 10year / 100,000 mile warranty.

If it works, you can't fix it!
Monitor & look for other symptoms.
Temp/oil/Alternator

Do you think the whining noise triggered the Limp mode?
Does water, rain, or a car wash play a factor?
Does the whining sound the same with the HVAC on or off?
Doe's the whining sound frequency change with RPM's?
Is there a whining sound, when you turn the wheels left or right?

Re: Limp Home Valve Malfuntion (P2106)?

I think it is possible that the lhv was triggered from the sound. The wheels being turned does not make any sound. It only happens after you hit 40 mph and the max speed I have had her up to was 80 on highway.. it gets louder. I have not messed with anything under the hood, but someone (not mechanically inclinded) said it sounded like it was the belts. But usually belts will make the sounds more often. No rain... or washings... we havn't really had any rain to drive in for a month. Thanks

Re: Limp Home Valve Malfuntion (P2106)?

In most cases when a trans goes to fault mode,,,control of line pressure is allowed to rise to max pressure,,to protect clutches...A person will usually notice more harsh engagements ,,,and usually a buzzing sound caused by the pressure regulator busting it's hump to make lots of oil pressure available to internal oil circuits......Have them look at the car ,,,,you need it documented for warranty consideration......

If no DTC's for the Engine or transmission, I would suspect a broken wire/connector on ETC system.

Re: Limp Home Valve Malfuntion (P2106)?

did you get this problem resolved? you might consider replacing the PCV valve, un wanted pressures being restricted by a clogged PCV valve wil cause those issues in some of these vehicles.. including reduced power.

DTCs used in OBD-II vehicles will begin with a letter and are followed by four numbers.

The letter of the beginning of the DTC identifies the function of the monitored device that has failed. A "P" indicates a powertrain device, "C" indicates a chassis device. "B" is for body device and "U" indicates a network or data link code. The first number indicates if the code is generic (common to all manufacturers) or if it is manufacturer specific. A "0" & "2" indicates generic, "1" indicates manufacturer-specific. The second number indicates the system that is affected with a number between 1 and 7.

The following is a list showing what numbers are assigned to each system.
1.Fuel and air metering
2.Fuel and air metering(injector circuit malfunction only)
3.Ignition system or misfire
4.Auxiliary emission controls
5.Vehicle speed controls and idle control system
6.Computer output circuits
7.Transmission

The last two numbers of the DTC indicates the component or section of the system where the fault is located.

to resolve this issue replace the throttle positioning Sensor, that should resolve the issue, then have the code erased but write it down in case there is further issues. any codes needed to look up can be found at this site for these generic type codes.

For the noise their is a bearing on the drive shaft which does go bad occasionally.
