stuck exchanging rear bearing seal

Weird shudder from the back of my 1998 Trooper. felt like the parking brake was stuck.
It was.
All messed up with a greasy gunk that could only have come from the wheel bearing.
Studied my manual and went to work.
Removed brake caliper and speedsensor and parking brake parts, and pulled out the axle/bearingholder assembly, removed the circlip behind the bearing holder and tried to slide the axle out....... and tried a little harder.... and tried again. etc etc.
tried wd40, tried heat, tried a bigger hammer, tried setting a couple of bolts between the hub and the bearingholder and then backing of the nuts untill they would pushing the hub out of the bearingholder..............added heat..........and the biggest hammer......
45 minutes thinking this isn't too bad, rest of the day pure frustration.
Anyone who ever changed the bearing and/or seals in the back of their troopy must have somehow gotten that darn axle out. Please tell me what I missed.

I found a drawing in the shop manual that shows a "special tool" being used.
Hard to be sure but it looks like a large bearing splitter.
Ordered one from Amazon.
Will let you know how that works out once it arrives.

The OTC bearingsplitter is a nice tool but it needed some work before it was useable, the surface the nuts ride on was very rough and needed to be flattened.
Should have seen that before destroying the nuts that came with it (sigh)
So, after messing around for a while with splitter the bearingholder/axle combination is the clear winner!
No movement whatsoever.
Even with steel fillers between the hub surface and the splitter there is simply not enough of the wedge part of the splitter engaged before its body hits the bearingholder, Just not enough push to shove.

It seems there is no way of doing this without the help of a shop press.
I was quoted $85 for both axles.
Since the trooper is my youngest vehicle now seems a good time to invest in a press for this and future use.
Waiting for another new toy to arrive.

Now all I need is an excuse to buy a nice 2-post lift!

The 12 ton press from Amazon arrived and after bolting it together I could see that it would take some improvisation to make things work. Not enough height. After a lot of creative thinking ended up with the bearingholder bolted to the bottom of the crossbeam with the axle sticking up through it.
Still left with too little height I removed the press beam altogether, set one of the plates that come with the press on top of the axle and the jack on top of that.
Carefully tightened and aligned things. Surprisingly stable too.
Pumped untill I dared pump no more (I am not easily scared).
And...... a whole load of nothing whatsoever several times over.
Well I should probably be happy I didn't break anything but such obliterating defeat by carpart............. Sigh.
The time had come to swallow my considerable pride in selfsufficient-ness (gag) and seek professional help.
Took the bleeping thing to Motor Service Incorporated here in B'town 9not the shop quoted above).
Got a call within hours to come and get my parts.
This is what they told me:
Looked at it, none of us has ever seen a construction like it before.
Thought about it over lunch.
Got a section of pipe big enough for the hub to fit through, put two 1.5" steel plates on top to support the bearingholder, aplied close to 20 Tons of pressure and things popped loose.
Cost: $15.00
Can't help feeling a bit ........... you understand.
I used my new press to re-assemble which was nice.
I guess.
Oh well a lesson learned and new tools earned.
Just don't know how I will ever be able to make the case for a nice lift after this.

A little extra info on greasy parking brakes I found on Planetisuzu (recommended addition to your favorites!).
If the ventline of the rear differential gets clogged pressure can build in the diff as it heats up while driving.
This pressure can cause fluid to push out past the seal.
In that case clearing the vent and cleaning up the brake parts may fix your problem.
Wiser to be safe and pull the axle to replace the seal but there is no need take it apart any further.
In my case I could feel lateral movement in the bearing so I had to go the whole way.
O, and obviously check your diff. fluid level.
