No Vacuum
1998 Windstar Limited. I have no vacuum to my rear Auxiliary Unit. I am considering buying a hand vacuum pump. However, I never used one. Is there a video available, or can someone advise me in the operation or its function.

Re: No Vacuum
What is the purpose behind using a hand vacuum pump if there is not vacuum getting to the Rear AC deflector motor?
Operation of the pump is fairly straight forward... there's a nipple on the pump, you connect a hose between the device you want to test and the nipple, then pump. The pump usually has a gauge to show the pressure, which sometimes helps to find a vacuum leak. There is a valve on the pump to release the vacuum. |

Re: No Vacuum
I would like to clear the line if possible. I bought a new switch for the console panel!

Re: No Vacuum
OK. If the line is blocked, vacuum pressure (15 psi) may not be enough to blow out the clog. The pipe is not very large inner diameter. You might need to apply pressure as well.
When I lost operation of the rear AC diverter many years ago, I think the problem was completely in the switch. |

Re: No Vacuum
Ones of the first things I changed is the switch. The line was disconnected underneath the car. That's how I found out there was no vacuum. I can move the door manually but just hot air comes out of the roof vents.

Re: No Vacuum
In my 30 yrs of work- I have never seen or had a vacuum line that needed to be cleared- in most every case- it is a disconnect, a rub-thru, a burn thru, or a cracked line- or a check valve stuck shut- how would it even get plugged up?- also vacuum is the absence of air pressure- so it is measured in in-hg and can only go as low as what your barometer states is the current atmospheric pressure-
so I would trace the line from front of vehicle to the back and test at every junction, or splice for adequate vacuum- pretty easy actually- when I find the vacuum is missing- then back track to the leak-- NEVER pressurize a vacuum circuit- since vacuum lines do not use clamps, and only are pushed together at connections- you could blow the vacuum connections apart- in places you can't get to- and that is a real pain to fix.

Re: No Vacuum
I did trace the line before when I had a problem with the front. When I replaced the switch to the rear , I found debris acting as a plug. That same line I traced from where it was disconnected underneath the car to a junction underneath the steering column, then across to the rear switch. I will again retrace the line from the rear paying attention to the aforementioned details you have prescribed. However, I am not skilled in the vacuum testing you mentioned. That's the reason for asking for assistance. I will recheck and get back to you.

Re: No Vacuum
Why not just run a new line? pretty easy to do- plug it into a known vacuum source and route it thru the switch and then to the back. That's what Ford will do if they can't find it....

Re: No Vacuum
Is it necessary to connect the line to the junction switch near the steering column?
