The 41TE Woes

'96 Caravan with 3.3 liter and EATX (AKA A604/41TE). I go to start her, key in and switch to on, transmission read out says R (not too worry has said this for years), turn key and no sound, shift in and out of P (well that does not register, still says R) and finally get her to crank and away we go. After this episode all was well on my journey. Car is home and I am going out and adjust the shifter cable (as soon as rain stops) and see what this produces. All I can think of is either the cable adjust or the neutral safety switch is amiss (the range selector of not showing the P may be a PRNDL switch, but I am not sure, not too worried if she will start and run. I had the transmission rebuilt 6,000 miles ago and also the torque converter replaced so the transmission should be OK, the electricials I am not sure about. After I adjust the cable I will re-post, any and all suggestions gladly accepted.

Re: The 41TE Woes

Adjusted shifter cable linkage and she now starts all of the time, however, I still see me in R as opposed to P with key to on before start. After I start her up gear selections are normal, well, except that there is no indication of being in P or N

Re: The 41TE Woes

I'd like to say the Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) took the place of the PRNDL switch but, like you I'm only 99% sure. Could just be the connection. As I recall the Autozone site has replacement instructions. Just have to register with them to get them now.

Re: The 41TE Woes

Thanks for the response, it is a range sensor and available for about $30.00 from AutoZone, I have a Haynes manual and will first try an clean the electrical connector contacts before spending any money.
