96 b2500 rear wheel won't come off

Got a flat tire. Tried to get wheel off rt. rear. Took off lug nuts (yes, all five) and wheel won't come off...seems like fused or something to the drum. Tried big hammer banging behind wheel (afraid to hit the edge of the brake drum), prying with crowbar through slots (wheels are chrome slotted w/ chrome plastic centercaps), really banging away on tire with BIG hammer. No luck. Even drum won't come off with wheel still stuck to it. What's the dang deal here? Any ideas anybody? I'm afraid to really clobber the wheel with the sledge- bend it and/or wreck the chrome. Heat? Afraid torch will melt the plastic/chrome center caps. Never heard of this problem before, but this Van of mine continually conspires against me. AAAAUUUGGGHH!!!!

Put the lug nuts back on all the way (finger tight) then back them off a 1/4 to a 1/2 turn. Drive the van a 100 feet or so while turning the steering wheel rapidly left and right. The weight of the van will break the rim loose for you.

BTW, this works well for stuck on rotors and drums too.

Yup...don't have to back them off very far.

Re: 96 b2500 rear wheel won't come off

Thanks to both replyers. Got the darn thing off finally....had to drive over a chunk of 4x6 with the lug nuts loose to rock the wheel enough to loosen it. My guess is that the chroming process used up some of the engineered tolerance gap between the wheel and axle hub. Add
some good old Washington Rust (it never sleeps around here) and the result is one stuck wheel. I got out my Dremel with a little grinder and took off some of the chrome slag, wire brushed and WD40'd the hub, fixed the flat tire and I'm rollin' again. Thanks again.

Ah, trash the WD40. It will only add the the rust problem later. It's a good product to free or soak stuck parts, but never to use for long term. WD40 assists in having rust happen. Google around and read up on the topic.
