Replacing spare with full size tire
I did a search about this and didn't find much info. I replaced the spare (probably never used - DOT date week 47 of 1999) with a summer (aka replacement oem) tire today. I have a tow bar installed. A bit tricky as there didn't seem to be much clearance. Fortunately the supporting cable can be extended and I was able to attach it to the wheel. So far, just today, the replacement tire appears to be supported OK and fit in the space available.

Re: Replacing spare with full size tire
Glad to see you were able to make it work. I always like to replace my "dummy spare" with a full sized one. Unfortunately, my whole assembly came apart when it rusted from the salt usage on our roads in the winter. I ended up keeping my full size spare in the back of the van as that was pretty much the only available space. Made it hard when I needed to transport a lot of things as the full size tire took up a lot of valuable real estate back there.
