92 Riviera Transmission Problem

I backed into my driveway and went to pull back forward and then back again to pull into my spot.As I went to back up again it would only go forward and wouldn't even go into reverse or park..I had to unlock my door manually to open the door.I had to turn it off still in drive..Any suggestions on what may have happened??? I've never had trouble with it before..

Sounds like the transmission linkage cable has come undone, either at the shifter, or at the trans itself, underneath.

Well,I've been trying to get a jack under my car and can't in the spot it is in..The transmission is in drive so it can't be started or put in any other gear..Would it hurt my transmission to drag it about 20 ft. to where I can get a jack under it..Thank you for any response.

Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Go reallllly slow, and dont jerk it too hard. It should be fine to drag it really slow and easy for a very short distance.

We have to use a come along to drag it..So I'll try it..Thanks for your response.Forgot to add.And I'm sure this is important..We have to move it BACKWARDS and not forward..It is against a fence in the front..

Why in the world are you jacking it up?

The cable connection is on top of the tranny....it should be just below the brake booster.....with E-brake applied have someone move the shifter(engine off)....if the linkage on top of the tranny does not move, physically rotate the linkage towards the front of the vehicle....this should put it in park.....

If it moves, without moving the shifter in the vehicle, then either the cable is broken, or it has come loose from the shifter(this assumes the cable is attached to the linkage on the tranny)....

So like I said, just lift the hood....have someone move the shifter(ebrake applied), and see if the cable moves where it should be attached to the linkage on top of the tranny....maybe it just popped off the linkage...pop it back on.....should snap in place by squeezing it onto the "ball" with a pair of pliers....

Yep.That's what is was..But the grommet won't stay on the linkage,I guess because it is worn..Can it be replaced?? Thank you for all your help..

Unfortunately no, the cable usually has to be replaced....but I must admit, I have seen some "exotic" solutions for keeping the cable on that ball.....

My recommendation is a new cable, for safety reasons....

Exotic is what I did...lol...I have two zip ties holding it on for now , but at least I'm able to drive it..Thank you for all your help and have a Merry Christmas..
