Bad Neutral safety switch - can't find new one.
First I'll say it's not called a neutral safety switch (that was an old skool term for more or less the same thing). It's called the Manual Lever Position Sensor. My '94 Escort (with the automatic overdrive trans) wouldn't start, and left me stranded in a rain storm for 3 hours. Had it towed to my shop, and after a day of looking they said they couldn't find one. So they bypassed it ($225), telling me I'd just have to be careful to make sure the car was in park or neutral before starting it. My elderly father sometimes drives the car, so I wasn't too pleased but said go ahead.
I went to pick up the car last Monday night, got out on to the street, and realized it wasn't shifting at all, and stuck in high gear. If Ford had just put a 2nd gear detent on that trans, it wouldn't be a big deal, but they didn't So the car is basically undrivabe as is, and I'm on the hook trying to find the part. It's obsolete at Ford; They don't even have a photo of it. The finally, after giving me the number for a shift lock actuator (different part...) gave me the part number F1CZ 78247A. However this number does not come up in any searches, even on ebay. When I search the part by name, this is what comes up. Some denote rwd cars (which I know the AODE is for) but none say for Escort, or for transverse AOD. I'm not sure what the transmission is called - E4OD? C4DE? I'm only familiar with the older rwd transmissions like Fordomatic, C4, C5, C6, AOD, and AODE. Internet searches and my haynes manual do not give a model name for it. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...ensor&_sacat=0 The confusing thing is these are all plastic parts, but I can't see the one on my car as it's at the shop and hasn't been removed. My finger is pointing towards where it's supposed to be under a horseshoe metal plate. https://twitter.com/PNWTJ/status/960247790193426432 So my questions are; 1)Does anyone know the name/code for the 92-96 Escort transverse automatic overdrive 2) Does anyone have an extra trans they'd be willing to sell the part off of? 3)Does the part you have look like any of the ones on ebay? If I can't find the right part, I'm going nowhere fast. Any help is greatly appreciated. S 1994 Ford Escort 1.9 LX Hatch |

Re: Bad Neutral safety switch - can't find new one.
If Ford has removed the part and you have it in your hands there are 2 options I would suggest. Go to Radio Shack and get a tech to repair yours or call Old South Auto in south FL Hwy 27. They are great ant helping and getting the part for you. Easy pay over the phone and excellent service. Be sure to have the information available when you call. Make model VIN number and part. Good Luck.
