Discovery High Idle Problem

My friend has a 1997 Discovery 4L that would not start. Bad fuel pump. It was replaced and ever since then, it won't idle right. It runs at 2000 RPM and after it warms up it goes to approx 1200 RPM. How could changing a fuel pump cause the idle to increase?

Any help or direction would be appreciated. the nearest dealer is 250 miles away

Re: Discovery High Idle Problem

Next to the throttle on the upper intake manifold there is a block-off plug that goes to an idle adjustment screw. Remove the plug (screw in a self-tapping sheet metal screw and pull on that) and turn the idle screw until rpms are around 700, do this while the engine is running and up to operating temperature. It's not the proper way to do it but it's as close as you're going to get without having T4 (Rover scan tool).

The fuel pump may have been going bad for a while and the idle adjusted to compensate, so with proper fuel pressure the idle needs to be turned back down. Or you've got an unrelated problem, which is more likely.
