1991 tracker auto trans problems
I have a 1991 tracker with 193,000 miles when I start out after it has been setting for a while it runs fine through 1st gear when it shifts it goes into neutral. If I down shift and run it in 1st gear for a couple of miles its ok. Any ideas on the problem.

Re: 1991 tracker auto trans problems
sounds the same as mine did. it progressively got worse. then i lost 1st, as it joined up with reverse. now it don't want to shift out of park on really cold mornings. If you can afford it I'd say get it to a trans shop, (reputable), if like me drive it like you stole it, always park where you can drive forwards out, lacking reverse. I came home for lunch, went out after lunch and reverse seemed to team up with 1st. takes off in 2nd, real slow too.

Re: 1991 tracker auto trans problems
I have a 1991 tracker with the same problem. It has about 214,000 kilometres on it. My tranny would not shift into 3rd in the morning. It would just rev as 2nd gear kicked out. Dropping it into 2nd gear for a few seconds then back to drive and it works for the rest of the day!!! Here's the problem, the valve body rubber seals get rather dry over the years and won't seal properly. Very soon however while driving the rubber becomes pliable again and all is well. The good news is it will not lead to the destruction of the tranny. The problem simply won't go away without taking measures. Tranny conditioners like Lucida and BG Products are great but need to be used in the earlier years of the vehicle to prolong any dried seal problems. Here's what to do..trust me it works; pour 1 ounce of clean brake fluid into the transmission. Within 1 day the rubber seals everywhere inside the tranny will be more pliable without any damage to the rubber. It's a short term solution yet my tracker has been ok now for more than 2 years with this remedy. A good tranny flush and a filter change will also do wonders. Still, a rebuilt tranny will solve everything.
