2001 Golf, 97K, $6,000 -- Should I buy?
Hi, I'm in the market for a used VW Golf or Jetta, and I know almost nothing about cars, so I need a lot of help. (Don't be surprised if I post a lot of these types of postings.)
An auto broker is selling a 2001 VW Golf with 97K miles in "excellent" condition for $6,000. KBB prices it at around $4,500-5,200 for a good-to-excellent condition private party value. The car has power everything (windows, locks, etc.), auto transmission, and a sunroof. He e-mailed me the AutoCheck report, and it shows that the vehicle has had 3 owners, been in one collision with another vehicle, and was serviced 5 times until around 50K miles (when it switched owners, I assume). The report doesn't show any maintenance between 50-97K. Is this a good deal? He has invited me to take a test drive and have a pre-purchase inspection this weekend. What sort of questions should I ask him? Should I take the car to a dealer for inspection? What questions should I ask the dealer during the inspection? Thank you!! |

Well over book value. Prior accidents and who knows on the maintenance. Its a $3000-$4000 car at best. If you bought, the first thing to do is timing belt and water pump change out for engine protection. About $700-$900 added to your $6000. If it were me i'd keep on looking. You can find a newer model for that price.

Yeah that's way to much for a 2001 with that mileage. I paid 5K for mine at 85K miles but that was only because I was buying it from my brother so I was very generous.

Unless its a tdi, book value is out the window with them. Gas...no way!
Regardless its due for a timing belt. |

I've owned a 2001 Golf for 2 years now. No major issues with it, I really like the car
