My 95 Spyder is back! But top is broken... help!
Well, over a week past due, but it's finally back. Now I can tend to those wheels and brakes soon ... but my convertible top has nearly exploded.
Prior to the wreck and going into the shop, the top went down perfectly. I went to the shop to pick it up, they said they were having problems but I could take the car home for the weekend (woohoo!). I said I'd come down to take a look and maybe had some ideas. I went through the usual checklist on the phone ... car is on, battery is charged, no loose connections ... but a sound from the passenger hydraulic pump and the top operates very jerky. But, the hydraulics were bled so it's not air bubbles. Now, it's just quit working altogether. I saw them fold the top down, but as soon as it hit the trunk, it wouldn't move. Now, the lights on the switch don't show, the car doesn't beep, and the dash light "ASC ON" is on now. Hooking a diagnostic reader to the car ... the car won't even communicate with it. There's power going to the switch, fuses checked out fine, and there's power coming from the switch (as tested with a test light). Not sure what's wrong from there. The passenger side hydraulic pump is failing, but was functional before. It sounds like the gears are stripped, sorta like the headlights that get stripped on the Trans Ams. I'm wondering if the collision knocked the pump that in any way would have stripped the gears or done damage. The shop has been talking to Mitsubishi tech, but said every time they get one thing working, another breaks (as this morning, they said the top wouldn't fold ... it did, then the switch quit working). I've got some electrical demons or something, possibly some wiring for the top that is run through the frame or behind the panels on the driver's side? But it was working fine prior to the crash ... I just spent $3500 on the car in november, and put less than 400 miles before it got smashed. If ANYONE out there has a clue what I should look into, please let me know. I'm so desperate to get it fixed! (I have a second post on my transmission/shifter too) |

You just described my nightmare. I hope I never run into those issues and I'm sorry I won't be able to give you direct help. However, I can point you to some resources. Do you have the Spyder Service Manual? Stop in at yahoo groups 3000spyders and you'll find good information (and maybe the manual). If they don't have a copy still, let me know and I can email you what I have.

Re: My 95 Spyder is back! But top is broken... help!
Hi Yogs,
Yes, welcome to my nightmare. Over 6 months now without having the car. I need to sell my Trans Am (financial reasons) and it's already depreciated nearly $750 since the 3000 was hit. I'm in a REALLY bad spot now since I don't have the 3000 and desperately need it so I can sell the TA (payments on 2 expensive sports cars + house + life = sucks). Anyway, yes, I have the Spyder manual *I think*, I have a manual with hundreds of pages that covers the conversion from the coupe to convertible, that I left with the body shop last week. I forgot I had it til I was looking for my '72 BMW service manual ... doh! I just ordered one of those "manuals on CD" off ebay for the coupe, hoping that will help some. I've tried looking around Yahoo! but I can't find where the groups are at? Could you point me in the right direction? I'm a member here and on 3Si, so Yahoo! groups would be a welcome addition. Thanks! - James |

Re: My 95 Spyder is back! But top is broken... help!
Well ... car has magically "fixed itself". After driving it for the day (while getting service done on the Trans Am), I took it back to the shop so they could finish up the work on the top. And, it was working just fine (with the exception of a horrid grinding noise from the passenger pump, like a gear stripping; and the fact it won't open past halfway).
Does anyone know if it's possible that the gears were knocked slightly out of alignment, causing them to grind and go bad from a side impact, rather than normal "wear and tear"? The insurance company doesn't want to pay to fix it because they think it's normal wear and tear (since the car is 11 years old) and the body shop is having a hard time saying otherwise since noone really works on hardtop convertibles like this. If anyone can help with this, I'd be forever indebted. (I'll be joining the Yahoo! group later today, but I really don't want ANOTHER email and they won't let me sign up with a non-yahoo one.) |

Yeah, the motors do wear out over time - however, hearing a griding sound is more likely a failure then a 'wear out'. The company is trying to save some bucks by making that claim (the universallly say that about everything). The guys at the shop should be able to tell on sound alone that the gears aren't worn out. Worn out gears don't grind.

Anyone know of any reputable hardtop convertible specialists in the northern virginia area? Insurance is willing to pay for diagnostics but the body shop doesn't generally do work on hardtop convertibles so I'm not sure if it's going to work out right or not. They've done great work so far, but this goes beyond their normal stuff....
