Exclamation MR2 Help PLease!!! Airbags!!

Hey Im just going to turn 17 this summer and get my license. My dad has a 1989 Toyota MR2 that was his brother and it only has around 20,000 miles on it (he never drives it). My mom, unfortunately, has banned me from driving it because it has no airbags. Can I install the airbags if the car has never had them? Can a professional mechanic install them for me? Please help me! I really want to drive this MR2

Re: MR2 Help PLease!!! Airbags!!

Its not practical. You have to have airbag sensors in the front bumper, an airbag computer, and how are you going to put one in the steering wheel?

The 91 and later MR2 has a driver's airbag, and the 94 and later have driver and passenger airbags. Get one of these, or buy a MR spyder.

Re: MR2 Help PLease!!! Airbags!!

i dont know .... i would definaetly prefer no airbags

i use to have a 97 protege and i put in an aftermarket steering wheel. later on i got into an accident. my mom felt the same way till the doctor said that i was lucky cause if i had the airbags in i would have broken my nose and have major neck injuries so i prefer without and so does my mom.

Re: MR2 Help PLease!!! Airbags!!

have your mom in the car at all times, that way you'll have an airbag in the car.

What's the big deal about bags. she obviously survived all these years without one. When I was a kid, we layed on the rear package tray in the back of the old Plymouth fury. Oh and that car didn't even have rear seat belts either. Guess I survived. I had bags. I went to far as to buy only vehicles without them (1985 ford truck, 1988 ford truck, 1991 toyota corolla, 1985 MR2, 1990 dodge grand caravan). even my motorcycle isn't equiped with air bags (just saddle bags)

Re: MR2 Help PLease!!! Airbags!!

The car never came with airbags, so there is no way around that. You're not going to install an airbag in a car which never had one from the factory. You're best bet it to convince your mom to lighten up, as the car never had them to begin with, or sell the car and buy a newer car with airbags. Most cars started getting airbags around the 91-92 model years.
