1997 3500 5.9L Serpentine Belt Replacement
Hi guys,
My serpentine belt shredded and fell off the other day. My question is.... How difficult is it to replace it myself? Will I have to remove any other parts to be able to actually get to the pulleys? Just from a quick peek it looks like there isn't very much room in there between the radiator fan and the motor. Also, does anyone know of a video anywhere showing how to do it? I looked everywhere and all I can find is videos of the Mini Vans. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Neal |

It's not that hard, I had one break while out driving and I installed a new one on the roadside with nothing more than a 15mm wrench to pull the tensioner over. Take the intake hose of the air cleaner for extra room and you might also have to get underneath to get the belt on the main engine pulley.

Re: 1997 3500 5.9L Serpentine Belt Replacement
Thanks for your reply. I just got started on it this afternoon and now have found the bearings on the idler pulley are worn out and the tensioner also is bad. So, I've gotta go back to the parts store to pick those up and hopefully will finish up sometime tomorrow.
I've got a bad back so that is why I asked about how involved the job is. So far I've been able to get to everything without having to get under the van so that helps a lot. Also, the 3500 sits up pretty high off the road so I think I'll be able to get under it if I must. Thanks again, Neal |
