What do you recommend?
I've got an '02 Silvy ( 80,000 ) with the common piston slap and also a bit of lifter noise ( I think....It's louder at lower rpm's and quiets down at higher ). I'm thinking about throwing in a little additive to my crankcase to maybe clean up some gunk. I've had guys tell me to use marvel mystery oil and some swear by seafoam. What do you gearheads on here recommend??

SINCE 2000 my silverado 5.3L makes noises at times...synthetic oil 5-30wt improves the slap noise on my vehicle to almost nothing now... the lifter noise I use marvel mystery oil,,,1oz/ qt of engine oil capacity...so 5 oz. max...is all you need ,,,if it is debris in the lifters the noise will go away in a 100-200miles..check oil condition if it turns black replace engine oil,, then repeat the marvel mystery oil... the other item would be to replace the PCV ..this is mounted on the driver side rear of the engine,,, it seams that as my engine ages the lifter and slap noises are much less of an issue...strange |

Re: What do you recommend?
Yeah...I was leaning toward the mystery oil over the seafoam. I thought the syn. oil would also make a diff. It had reg. Valvoline 5w-30 in when I bought it. I've been running Mobil 1 5w-30syn for about 4,000 miles now with no change at all in the noise. If nothing else I'll just turn the stereo up a little louder to make it go away..lol.

I forgot to mention fram filters are bad,,,use wix, purolator plus, mobil oil filters...fram has a poor filter media,,,very thin can break apart.. ac filters were good years ago,, then it was contracted out to a inferior type.. I cut them open so this is not something that I'm guessing at.. |
