Smile 1/24 coachbuilding the 1739GT Bertone 3000 (body only)

Hi all, here's my latest coachbuilding attempt & i hope you like it or find some ideas / inspirations on this.
this is the 1959 bertone 3000, a one off creation using a 250GT swb base.

the base body i've selected for the chop is the BMW 507 spyder, what you see here is the stage of shortening the wheels base to 2400mm. the chopped body is seen here with the original donor 507..

after the wheelbase alteration, i proceed to flatten the whole body of the 507 so that the lines are more of a straight curve both ends. i also added styrene sheets to the front to straighten those doping headlights a little.
the bonnet has to be removed totally in order to easy facilitate the straightening the headlights.

this is the final look for the first stage of mod with the bonnet glued on.

more updates soon.
thankx!

Re: 1/24 coachbuilding the 1739GT Bertone 3000 (body only)

thankx for my first audience-ship, klutz_100!
here's more...

work has begun on the headlights. this is really a painful job cos' the fenders of the 507 is totally different from the bertone car. stance is the name of the game here, to capture the bertone lines the fenders must be straightened!the headlights are now being work on too. i've extended the headlights further as the bertone body front section is much longer than the 507...
as the whole body was nearly cut up by now, the rein-forcement can be seen here below the body, to give that extra support for the further works.

the whole frontal area is being putty up now.also, the side skirts are added in, more work is needed for the front section as the bertone houses a unique one of a kind front section.

here i smoothen the wiper section to blend in to the whole bonnet piece, which will be cut out later as the bertone bonnet piece opens from here. i'm still figuring out how to cut out this big front opening section so that the B-pillar section will not collapse...humm.

more updates coming...

You sure like to play with plastic and putty!

Nice start on this one!

PS: I assume you still didn't take time to prime the other 2 previous "oeuvres d'art"!

Looks like your best effort so far. It's hard to judge from the pictures, but the sides look like they are a bit too flat. Trunk areas bottom edge is also litlle too high, making the whole trunk a bit too narrow from the side. Nose looks great and the side profile looks good to me (excluding the trunk area). Do you have good photos from the back of the car?

Hi niko, this is not the end yet so the shape is slowly taking shape...
here're a few shots of the back of the bertone...

more updates coming...

I can't (of course) check the dimensions, but i think that you need to take a serious look at the Porsche 911 roof... Bend the a pillars back a bit and reshape the rearwindow area...

Re: 1/24 coachbuilding the 1739GT Bertone 3000 (body only)

ok, time for some updates...

more straightening work one the front fenders leading to the headlights. also the stance factor has come into place at this stage; i.e. looking at the pics & working simultaneously.

the back boot has been removed after some heavy mods at the back area, i need the boot to support my heavy working hands.

stance checking once again, this time the side profiles. the real car sports a slight arching towards the extreme, i sand them accordingly.

the front cosmetic work starts, i drilled a pair of holes just beneath the headlights to house those small white lamps. also, i thickened the whole chin area after looking closely at the pics in hand. i reckon alot of shaping is to be done here.

i also thicken the 2 sides of the boot area to make a small fin. the boot level seems to be a little recessed when compared to the sides, some artistic skills needed here...

ok, that's all for now!

rightly said bro!
nail it...yes, gotta nail it.

i hope i've provided some form of inspiration on what you all can actually do with those spare or junk model bodies lying around.

ok back to the mod, here's the last few pics of the completed basic body shape before i embark on the roof making. i still have no idea how to do the roof though.

the stance has been captured from this pic, from what i see. the straightened fenders leading to the main headlights can be seen here, also the slightly curved front & back extremes too. feedbacks are welcome at this stage.

the boot area has been shaped up to what i can see from the pics too. also, you notice i tried to duplicate the very small fins along each side of the rear fenders. i also rounded all the bottom rear ends to give a smoother look.

here's a top shot of the car. i must say, for a shorter wheelbase of only 2400mm...this car is actually longer than most of my 2600mm ferraris! (error!?). at this stage if i can figure out what to do with the roof, i might cut out the front bonnet section to simulate the opening (very big one!). also, you notice the doors are not there, for now. i have to construct the roof first before i can scribe out the doors (easy task) then i again figure out if it's feasible to cut out the doors too!

one last look at the front section...no fancy humps & bumps on this bertone body...just gentleman-like straight lines.

last look at the boot area too, i reckon this car has a huge boot area, quite unusual for a ferrari of that time...but nothing is confirmed until i can get a spare SWB chassis into it.

the most tedious work up to now is this part, sculpturing the frontal area to look decent. i think the beauty of these mods is the stage whereby you actually have to 'sculpture' certain parts to look good.

with that i now leave you with the completion of another junk body turned into a coachbuild work. i don't know what's gonna be next, but i do hope i can try another bertone style SWB 250GT...the shark-head beauty.

but til then, i have to find a very good reason to convince myself to use a brand new BMW 507 model kit for it.

cheers!

Nice start!!!

I know CMA started doing a kit of the 250 Bertone SWB sharknose 10 years ago. That project has been sitting on the shelf for years. Paul Fisher did the body.

Yeah, that project has been on the shelf for at least 10 years.
